Five days in Chiang Mai -
Choice 1
Day 1 - Doi Suthep
temple and handicrafts -
This tour starts at 9am. You
are picked up from your hotel by your guide.
First drive from your hotel up to Doi Suthep Temple, which is approx. 12kms from downtown
Chiang Mai. The majority of the route is a winding uphill journey passing through Doi
Suthep National Park. At the base of the hill you will pass Chiang Mai Zoo and the Kruba
Srivichai Monument.
At the end of the journey, we leave the car at the base of the temple steps. You can reach
the temple by climbing the 190 steps or by taking the small "cable car" to the
top.
Once at the temple you can admire the magnificent views over the temple valley as well as
the temple atmosphere and architecture. The highlight is the inner sanctum which houses
the enormous golden stupa.
Drive down
from Doi Suthep and have lunch. Afterwards visit some of the many handicraft villages in
the Sankamphaeng area. As well as seeing products you will be able to see
how they are
made. Products include - celadon, silver, furniture, jewellery, lacquerware, silk, saa
paper, handmade umbrellas and more. Plenty of opportunities for buying bargains and
beautiful handmade products.
The tour ends when you are taken back to your hotel at approx. 5pm (L)
Day 2 & 3 - Two
Day Trek - Close Encounter with Nature
Day 2 Drive south of Chiang Mai to
an elephant camp and ride on the elephants for 1 hour. Continue driving on
to a Karen village, stopping for lunch on the way. From the Karen village
walk for 2½ hours through the foothills of Doi Inthanon, passing two
waterfalls on the way. Our final stop is another Karen village, where we
spend the night. (L,D)
Day 3 Walk for 1 hour in the morning, passing through a Karen village
and then rejoin the truck to drive on to the raft camp. We stop for lunch
on the way. In the afternoon raft down the river for 1 hour. Then drive
back to Chiang Mai. (B,L)
Day 4 - Chiang Rai & the Golden Triangle -
This tour starts at 7.30am. You
are picked up from your hotel by your guide.
Drive north-east from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai (approx. 180kms). On the way stop at the
hot springs at Mae Kachan and then continue on to Chiang Rai. Tour around the town of
Chiang Rai and continue driving to Chiang Saen (approx. 60kms). In Chiang Saen explore the
old temples including Wat Pa Sak; also visit the museum. Then drive a bit further to Sop
Ruak, this is the place where you can see the three countries of Thailand, Laos and Burma.
Stop here briefly, then drive to Mae Sai. Mae Sai is a border town on the Thai-Burmese
border. There is a market to browse around and look for Burmese products or some products
which have been brought from China. After Mae Sai we start to head for Chiang Mai,
visiting hilltribe villages on the way back to Chiang Mai.
This tour ends when you are taken back to your hotel at approx. 8pm. (L)
Day 5 - Thai
Cookery Course - Take a one day Thai Cookery course at the Green
Mango Thai Cookery School. The day includes a visit to the market,
preparation of curry paste from scratch, explanation of rice preparation &
cooking, and the cooking and preparation of five Thai dishes. Also tasting of Thai fruits or
dessert. The course runs daily and menu varies according to day.

1. Market visit
2. Cooking and preparation of sticky rice and steamed rice
3. Somtam (Papaya Salad)
4. Tom Kha Gai (Chicken in coconut milk soup)
5. Khao Pad Phak sai Kai (Fried Rice with vegetables & egg)
6. Nam Phrik Ong (Northern Style Spicy minced pork)
7. Steamed local vegetables to be eaten with Nam Phrik
8. Gluay Nam Cheum (Fried Bananas with coconut toffee and icecream)
9. Tasting Thai desserts
Pick up and drop off from/to city hotels and guesthouses is included. You
get your own recipe book to take home.

ancient city site of King Mengrai (the founder of Chiang Mai). Afterwards visit some of the many handicraft villages in

made. Products include - celadon, silver, furniture, jewellery, lacquerware, silk, saa
paper, handmade umbrellas and more. Plenty of opportunities for buying bargains and

Day 2, 3, 4 -
Chiang Rai & the Golden Triangle - Karen Hilltribe Homestay
Day 2 Drive north of Chiang Mai, first stopping at the hotsprings at Mae Kachan,
then continue on to Chiang Rai and continue further north to visit the border town
of Mae Sai. This town is on the border of Thailand and Burma and is the centre for cross
border trade in the area. There are markets on both sides of the border. Spend some time
exploring the border market town. Then we drive a bit further to visit the Golden Triangle ,
where the three countries of Burma, Laos and Thailand meet on the Mekong River.
Take a longtail boat down the Mekong River (approx. 1hr) to Chiang Saen and across to a
Lao island. We explore the town of Chiang Saen with its ancient temples. We then drive
back to Chiang Rai and check into our hotel. (L) (Wiang Inn Hotel)
Day 3 In the morning drive across upper Northern Thailand and visit Mae Salong, an
ethnic Chinese town set in the hills north of Chiang Rai. Mae Salong is famous for its
Chinese atmosphere and produces various Chinese agricultural products, the most
famous being its Chinese tea.
Drive down from Mae Salong which gives you views across the hills of upper Northern
Thailand and visit Thaton and the Padong (long neck tribe). This
tribe is famous for the brass rings worn around the womens necks which
give the appearance of a long neck. Then continue on to the Karen hilltribe village
where we spend the night. Accommodation in the village is basic and we spend the
night in a Karen hilltribe family house. Your guide will prepare dinner for you and we
spend the night in a village house with a host family. (B,L,D)
Day 4 After breakfast depart from the Karen village and drive south towards Chiang Mai.
On the way back stop at an elephant camp and ride on the elephants for approx. 1hr.
Continue driving to Chiang Mai stopping at an orchid farm on the way. Transfer to hotel
in Chiang Mai. (B,L)
Day 5 - Thai

Day 2, 3, 4 -
Golden Triangle Explorer - 3 day tour
Day 2
Drive north of Chiang Mai, first visiting the orchid farm and then drive
further north, close to Chiang Dao. Stop at an Elephant Camp and take a
ride on the elephants for 1 hr . After lunch we
visit the Chiang Dao Caves - an ancient complex
of temple caves used for
worship for many centuries. Lastly we continue the journey up to Thaton
(on the banks of the Kok River) where we spend the night. (L) Overnight at
Thaton Riverview Resort
Day 3
In the morning visit the Padong (long neck tribe). This tribe is famous
for the brass rings worn around the womens necks which give the appearance

1hr) to Chiang Saen. We explore the town of Chiang Saen with its ancient
temples. In the afternoon drive back to Chiang Rai - stop for lunch and
visit Wat Phra Kaew. Late afternoon we drive back to Chiang Mai; there is
the option of stopping at a local resort to taste some of the best locally
grown coffee.(B,L) Day 5 - Thai
